An EPA office building in Chicago is facing an outbreak of Legionella bacteria and elevated lead levels in drinking water, according to an employee union group.
The American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE) Local 704 has filed a formal complaint over the contamination, alleging that EPA is violating requirements in the union’s collective bargaining agreement meant to ensure workers’ health and safety.
The building is managed by the General Services Administration and also houses offices for the Department of Housing and Urban Development and the Department of Agriculture, according to GSA. It was built in 1991.
