So far, the administration and the Department of Environmental Protection have been hit with what may be the strongest backlash during the governor’s five years in office.

TALLAHASSEE, Florida — Political figures joined environmentalists Tuesday at rallies calling on Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis and state officials to provide answers about proposals to build golf courses and other amenities at state parks.

Rep. Brian Mast (R-Fla.) said during an event at Jonathan Dickinson State Park that the public deserves to know whether someone else still can propose a golf course after the Department of Environmental Protection said last week plans there were being dropped after the mysterious Tuskegee Dunes Foundation withdrew a proposal.

“Again, I think the community is owed a very very direct answer on that,” Mast said. “There are sure, I think, tens of thousands of people ready to come in and provide public comment to whoever the voting power would be on that.”

Environmentalists also said the state should drop additional plans for lodges, campgrounds, pickleball courses and disc golf at other state parks that were announced as part of the DEP’s “2024-25 Great Outdoors Initiative” proposed Aug. 19.
