Some environmentalists Wednesday remained skeptical of the announcement and said they will work to kill the initiative if it is unveiled again.

TALLAHASSEE, Florida — Republican Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis on Wednesday said state officials were going “back to the drawing board” with a proposal to build amenities, including golf courses, at state parks after it drew severe bipartisan opposition.

DeSantis said during an unrelated law enforcement press conference in Winter Haven that he had not approved the proposals that encompassed 350-room “lodges,” pickleball courts and disc golf in addition to golf courses.

“I never saw that,” DeSantis said in response to questions from reporters. “They are going back to the drawing board [to] talk to your local communities.”

He acknowledged meeting in the spring with representatives of the group Folds of Honor on a proposal later withdrawn to build two golf courses at Jonathan Dickinson State Park in South Florida.
