The Department of Energy said Thursday that Arizona has launched a home energy rebate program with funds from the Inflation Reduction Act, making it the third state to do so.

The $8.6 billion nationwide rebate program, which is being administered state by state, is one of the few areas of the 2022 climate law that directly benefits low- and moderate-income Americans, not companies. Some critics say DOE has complicated and delayed the rollout of the initiative, which could leave billions of dollars at risk if former President Donald Trump wins the November presidential election.

Under the law, the rebates can be used for a range of home efficiency projects, including electric appliances for heating and cooling, improved insulation and more efficient natural gas systems.

“Home energy rebates for clean and energy-efficient appliances and upgrades are good for the planet because they help cut pollution, but more importantly, they are good for Arizonan families because they will save money by lowering energy bills,” said White House climate adviser John Podesta in a statement.
